Making information a strategic issue
   
  Paul Hedley, fire safety officer with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service has been on the dual accreditation programme for six months. He has just completed the Managing Information module, which involved working through 'Managing for Knowledge'.
   
  "What the dossier has to say about the transfer of knowledge between individuals and groups so you get an holistic development was a real revelation to me. I think I have gained a better appreciation of how to apply the right person to the right job as a result."

"I analysed four projects currently being carried out in the department and concluded that two of them could in fact have been managed quite adequately at a lower level. I certainly wouldn't take all the credit for it, but this approach is now beginning to be reflected in current management practice in the service. Let's say that what I was doing was very timely!"

I was really interested in what the dossier had to say about the problems caused by the over--supply of information so that it ends up becoming a barrier to knowledge. I'm going to carry out an analysis of this in my own workplace which will go to the head of function and the head of training for their comments and will then go on to the brigade management team."

"It's the sort of thing that people don't usually have time to do but it all makes a difference to performance. On the whole the brigade has interfunctional work well-thought through - in a service like ours you have to - but there is always scope for improvement. Tackling some of the issues I have identified would be one."
