PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

A key responsibility for all managers is to carry out their own personal development planning. The Universal Manager resource recognizes the central role of the Personal Development Plan (PDP) to management development programmes by providing free guidance and formats for the construction of your own PDP.

Personal Development and the Continuous Learning Cycle

Development -  is the process of moving from one level of performance to the next.
Learning -  is the process of acquiring knowledge, understanding and the skills that underpin the development process.

The Learning Cycle

Learning drives Development, and as individuals we all learn more when we are enjoying the experience. As we gain experience we tend to learn more, gaining the confidence to develop our skills further, and so on, a continuous process. Therefore it is worth considering how we best learn as individuals and how to adapt or use the process to our personal advantage.

The learning cycle is adapted here for use within Personal Development Planning. Firstly, however we need to understand our own learning style, as this will reflect on the various stages of the cycle and will need to be developed.
